Kristen Stewart Thinks Twilight Is “Such a Gay Movie”

“I mean, a Mormon woman wrote this book.”
In a recent interview with Variety, Kristen Stewart, reflecting on her time in the Twilight franchise, acknowledges the queer undertones in the series. The Oscar-nominated actor, who came out as bisexual in 2012, recognizes the “queer sparkle” in Twilight, particularly as she embraces her queer identity. Stewart notes that the ostensibly heterosexual storyline of Twilight now appears to have subtle queer elements, stating, “It’s such a gay movie. I mean, Jesus Christ, Taylor [Lautner] and Rob and me, and it’s so hidden and not OK.”

Stewart suggests that the background of author Stephenie Meyer, a Mormon woman, may have influenced the series’ undertones, focusing on themes of oppression and desire that align with a Gothic, gay inclination. In the same interview, Stewart reflects on her role as a LGBTQ+ role model in Hollywood, humorously acknowledging the prevalence of shared experiences within the community.
