Robert Downey Jr. Believes His Finest Performances Went Somewhat Overlooked Due to Superhero Genre

Robert Downey Jr. reflects on his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, acknowledging that some of his best work may have been overshadowed by the superhero genre. During an appearance on Rob Lowe’s ‘Literally!’ podcast, Downey Jr. discussed the impact of his portrayal and the challenges he faced after exiting the franchise. He admitted feeling exposed following his departure, especially after the disappointing reception of his subsequent film, Dolittle.

Despite the setbacks, Downey Jr. expressed gratitude for the opportunities Marvel provided him and acknowledged the transformative effect it had on his career. The security and confidence he gained from playing Iron Man contrasted sharply with the vulnerability he experienced post-Marvel, leading to a period of introspection and growth.

Dolittle, released in January 2020, marked a significant departure from his previous successes, receiving poor reviews from critics and audiences alike. While fans may yearn for his return to the MCU, Marvel has been clear about honoring Iron Man’s legacy, leaving the possibility of his comeback uncertain. Only time will tell if the multiverse or other narrative devices will provide a pathway for Downey Jr. to reprise his iconic role.
